Tattoo Aftercare Instructions

A tattoo is a personal and permanent work of art. Please take care of it properly.

Tattoo aftercare starts at the tattoo studio. Whether we choose to apply a Saniderm/Tegaderm bandage or not, please keep your tattoo covered at least until you arrive home and you can clean the area properly.

Keeping your tattoo covered protects the open skin from potential bacteria and debris, as well as preventing any blood or plasma from contaminating anything.

  • If you choose to use the Saniderm/Tegaderm bandage:

After 8-24 hours please wash your hands thoroughly and remove the tattoo bandage. Wash the tattoo with a gentle antibacterial soap. Allow to air dry or pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not use cloth towels. To help the bandage adhere properly you can use a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and wipe it around the tattoo. Please be careful not to get too close to your tattoo as it will hurt and could affect your tattoo. Apply a thin layer of healing ointment, Aquaphor is recommended. Reapply another Saniderm wrap and leave it on for 3-5 days. After removing the final bandage please continue to wash, dry, and apply ointment 1-2 times a day until fully healed. If at any time either bandage seal breaks it is no longer safe and you must remove it.

  • If you choose the older/traditional method of healing:

As soon as you arrive home please wash your hands thoroughly and remove the bandage or plastic wrap. Wash the tattoo with a gentle antibacterial soap. Allow to air dry or pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not use cloth towels. Apply a thin layer of healing ointment, Aquaphor is recommended. Continue washing your new tattoo 2x a day every day and applying ointment for at least 1-2 weeks.

  • Do not pick or itch your tattoo.

  • Once the tattoo has scabbed over, switch to a regular moisturizer or lotion and apply it up to 2-3 times a day. We still recommend Aquaphor.

  • Do not soak the tattoo in water or expose it to direct sunlight until fully healed. No swimming, hot tubs, sunbathing, or extreme/excessive gym sessions while your tattoo is healing.

  • Do not use any scented creams or lotions as the harsh chemicals in them can irritate and even damage the tattooed skin.

  • Remember to drink plenty of water to help your skin stay healthy.

  • Once fully healed please make sure you are using sunscreen to protect your skin.
